ANALYSIS OF A TV PROGRAM

ANALYSIS OF A TV PROGRAM

Purpose of the Show:

Getaway is a wonderful and a great information show that will want you to go to different places in the world. On last week’s show they showed four Australians who went on a tour to Europe.

Another aspect of the program presented the host of the show visiting Cape York and told us that it is the best place for keen fishermen and a nice place for holidays. It was very informative in the sense that Cape York is not only for fishing but it is the place where Captain Cook set his foot in 1717. They also informed that the place is very famous for the biggest hatching place for turtles during night time.

Then the show informed about the wild life. The Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary in Coolangatta in Queensland where you can feed parrots. It is so beautiful that one would like to visit this place quite often. It has a waterfall walk and a place where generation of wildlife animals live. It also has a hospital for animals. There are around 2000 species of various animals and birds. Here one can go on a rope ride to watch birds and a fling fox flip for the last round of the ride. But, one has to be careful with ones feet because there are crocodiles below in the river passing by the ropeway. The crocodiles are around 5.5 meters in length and it is called Holy because people shout “Holy Molly”.

As mentioned above for the four Australians who went on a tour to Europe by a road trip. In the program they showed that they visited the South of France. They went to a place called Castle and Park of Beauregardi. Then they went to a winery place to see how wine is made and to drink one of the finest wines made in France. The place is called Bordeaux for a self drive wine tour. After that they went to a river to kayak and swim and to enjoy the scenery.

Another feature of the program Gateway was they visited and showed us Feather dale Wildlife Park in Doonside, Sydney. It was very informative in the sense that they showed a zoo keeper who was dedicated to his work and sincerity that he was rewarded with a free trip to Byron Bay with his family. They also showed Byron Bay, one of the best places in the far north of NSW and famous for kayaking.

They also showed a place in Melbourne called Melbourne Rock where you can chill out and do Aerobics.

Then, the program showed a famous Museum in Washington DC which is the biggest Museum in the world and was very informative.

Did the Show achieve its purpose?

I strongly believe that the TV program Getaway has achieved its purpose because it is very informative, interesting and absorbing and tells us everything as to how to go to the places, the cost involved and how long it takes to get there and what you can do there etc.

Represents all Australians

I strongly believe that Getaway represents all Australians because it is caring for the interests of all aspects of people living in Australia. For instance it tells us and informs us about the places to visit in Australia and around the world. Good holiday spots to enjoy and places which one has not heard or visited before. The program is absolutely absorbing and keeps the audience glued to their seats. Hence, I watch the program every week on Thursday’s at 7.30p.m. and make a note of places to be visited in future either with my family or when I grow up. Hats off to this show.

WATER USAGE

A normal household useage for four people is 542 litres per day. This information is gathered from Waterwrap customer newsletter. In this newsletter they have given a chart which is as follows:

People

Per household

Benchmark Water usage

Per Household

1 person

239 L/day

2 persons

360 L/day

3 persons

458 L/day

4 persons

542 L/day

5 persons

619 L/day

6 persons

689 L/day

My household useage  is 860 L/day and we have 4 people in a family. This consumption is quite high as compared to the chart mentioned above. The 860 L/day, I found out from my water bill which we receive quarterly. It mentions that we used 80000litres in 93 days hence per day we have used 80000/93=860 litres and in a week we would have used 860*7=6020 litres which well above the benchmark mentioned in the table.

Another way to know our household water usage is through the water usage calculator derived from Melbourne Government website.

How much water does your household use?

To help us understand how much water you use in our household and ways that we can use less water, the City of Melbourne has developed this Water Saving Calculator.

Water Usage Calculator

1. Do you have a dual flush toilet?

YES: 5 litres x 35 (flushes per week) x (4people in the household) =  700

2. Do you have a leaking toilet in your household?

NO:  you are wasting 0 litres per week from your toilet  =  0

3. How many minutes in total do household members spend in the shower on an average day? =  40

4. Do you have a low water flow AAA rated showerhead?

 YES, your household will use only:  7.5 litres x 7 days x ( answer from question 3=40 )  = 2100

5. How many baths does your household have each week?  = 35

96 litres x (((enter answer from the above question=35) = 3360

6. How many loads of washing does your household do in an average week? =          4

7. Do you have a water efficient AAAA rated front loading washing machine?

If NO, your household will use:

      130 litres x (enter answer from question 6=4)  = 520

8. Overall, do you try to save water in your kitchen?

If YES,   your household will use 473 litres per week (enter figure in box)=             473

9. Do you have a garden and if so do you try to save water with methods such as drip irrigation, tap timers, mulching and water efficient plants?

If YES, on average your household uses 651 litres a week on the garden

(enter figure in box) = 651

10. Do you, and those in your household, leave the tap running when brushing your teeth?

This wastes 5 litres per minute

If NO, you are only using an average of 1 litre of water each time.

Its estimated that each week each person uses 14 litres for teeth brushing.

      Your household uses:

number of people in your household x 14 litres   =  56

11. Do you have any leaking taps? Leaking taps can waste up to 200 litres of water a day.

          NO

12. Do you apply water conservation measures for other general water uses that occur in households?

If YES, your household will use an average of 670 litres each week

(enter figure in box) = 670

13. Does your household have a rainwater tank, or a greywater system for re-using water?

        NO, proceed to question 14

14. Have you changed your household’s water usage over the past few years ue to increased awareness of water scarcity?

If YES, on average your household saves 217 litres a week (enter figure in box) =   217

Total water usage          =    8530

(ADD your figures in bold and dark)

Total water savings          =  261

(ADD your figures in the red)

Total water used in your household per week          = 8269

(total water usage – total water savings )

Total water used by each person          = 2067

(divide total water use by the number of household members)Household Water Use

Total water used in your household per day          = 1181

(total water usage – total water savings )/7 days

My water bill gave me a reading of  860 litres per day which is almost similar to the water calculator which shows 1181 litres per day.

Based on the above calculation all the members in our family started saving water. Taking  all the above questions into consideration:

Day 1: Used less flush and instead of 10 minutes in a shower we all spend 6 minutes hence we saved 16 minutes which in turn result in a saving of 840 litres

from point 4 above

Day 2: We cut down on our baths by 10 for the week so the end of the week instead of 35 baths we should be having 25 baths. A further saving of 960 litres from point 5 above

Day 3: We kept the tap close when brushing teeth and save on brushing teeth by 10 minutes hence save 350 litres from point 10 above

Day 4: We have taken measures for other general water uses that occur in households that can save upto 500 litres of water from point 12 above

Day 5: We have changed our water habits and that has saved 5% of the total water consumption previously used. That will save us approximately 500 litres for the week from point 14 above

Day 6 and Day 7: Strictly followed the pattern used in the first 5 days hence at the end of the week we have saved approximately 3150 litres. Hence, our weekly consumption now is 5,119 litres. Hence total water usage per day is 731 litres which still higher than the 542 litres per day bench mark which I mentioned in the beginning.

Rigorous measures needs to be applied. Requested  Dad to install a rain water tank. Buy a front load washing machine. Use less water on dish washer and told my Mum to use less water in washing dishes but to put them in the dish washer.

Myself and my sister use less water while brushing and watering plants. We have already installed the shower system as recommended and the toilet flushes.

OBSERVATIONS:
When I took the first reading of thermometer 1  and thermometer 2 it gave almost the same
reading which is 39.50 and 39.00 degrees centigrade. When I took the second reading after 10
minutes it showed a big change in reading from thermometer 1 to themometer 2. Thermometer
1 showed 39.00 degrees while thermometer 2 showed 41.00 degrees. This happened because
the glass jar was kept on thermometer 2. This happened in all the next 8 readings . Thermometer
2 showed more temperature reading than thermometer 1 because of the heat generated inside
the glass jar.

CONCLUSION:
This happened because the heat was getting trapped while taking taking the reading of
thermometer 2 . Also, the heat was surrounding outside the glass as well. This is because
there is a big whole created in the ozone layer and the heat is not bouncing out of the
layer. This is nothing but the green house effect damaging the ozone layer.

ANTARCTICA EXPLORER

ANTARCTICA EXPLORERS

The four most important Antarctic explorers were:

1.    Roald Amundsen

2.    Sir Ernest Shackleton

3.    Robert Falcon Scott

4.    Richard Byrd

Roald Amundsen: (born July 16, 1872, near Oslo, Norway)

·       He was the first person to reach the South Pole on December 14,1911 traveling by dog sled.

·       He was the first person to make it back all the way to his home. Other scientists could not make it back, and would die on their way back to their homes.

·       On December 14, 1911, Amundsen and his crew made it to the South Pole on dog sleds. They returned to their base camp on January 25, 1912; they had covered 1,860 miles in 99 days.

Robert Falcon Scott: (born June 6, 1868 in Britian)

·       He was the second person to reach the South Pole on January 4,1912 traveling by ship and reached the final destination by sled trip

·       Scott and his crew were frozen, exhausted, disappointed, and suffering from scurvy as they began their return trip .It was so cold that they froze to death.

·       All the crew members and Scott died on November 12, 1912

Compare and Contrast:

Ø    Robert Falcon Scott, and Roald  Amundsen were racing to the south pole

Ø    Their teams started at different points and got there at different times

Ø    Scott’s team died on there way back to their ship because they were wearing wool instead of heavy down parkas. Amundsen’s team wore heavy down parkas and made it back to their homes. Wool is not a very heavy material and hence Scott’s team froze to death

Ø    Scott’s team was found dead in their sleeping bags and nobody returned home while Amundsen and his team returned home successfully by planting the Norwegian flag at the Antarctica

Since Scott’s team had reached second  they were sorely disappointed to find Amundsen’s Norwegian flag. In his journal, Scott wrote, “Great God! This is an awful place, and terrible enough for us to have laboured to it without the reward of priority.”
